2009 Nursing Education Redesign Conference: Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education

Nov 17, 2009 | State Technical Assistance

Abstract

Nursing Education Redesign: Preparing the New Nurse

The Center to Champion Nursing in America sponsored an Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education on Nursing Education Redesign: Preparing the New Nurse on October 21-23, 2009 in Portland, OR.  Attendees learned more about the Oregon model for nurse education from the OCNE Team.  Other state team exemplars (CA, HI, NC, NY) shared best practices and lessons learned as they have implemented their versions of the OCNE model with conference participants from other states (CO, MA, MS, NM, TX, WA) who have committed to implement the OCNE model in their states.

Exemplar state team presenters participated in a ‘round robin’ of discussion panels that included representatives from OR, CA, HI, NC and NY.  Panel topics included a wide range of highly relevant and engaging topics:

  • Compelling Forces for Education Redesign;
  • Overcoming Barriers and Creating Partnerships;
  • New Partnerships: Academic Partners; New Partnerships: Funding Partners, Clinical Partners and Boards of Nursing;
  • Evaluation Planning;
  • Faculty Development; and
  • Redesigning Clinical Education.

Conference participants were also invited to participate in a tour of simulation facilities.
Several common themes became apparent, a few of which are noted below:

  • Developing a more educated and highly skilled workforce compels the need for nursing education redesign;
  • Faculty development, competencies, collaborative curriculum models, residencies and funding support are important building block for education redesign work;
  • The need for new models of clinical education:  concept-based, focused direct patient care, integrative experiences, case-based simulation, etc.; and
  • Only evaluate what really matters.

Nursing Education Redesign: Preparing the New Nurse presentations are posted on the OCNE website:  www.ocne.org   CCNA also commissioned a video of the conference which will soon be available.
