HHS Releases $13.4 Million in Recovery Funds to Support Nursing Education

Department of Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary Bill Corr announced the release of $13.4 million for nursing education. The funds, which were made available by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), go towards loan repayments for nurses who agree to practice in facilities with critical shortages and for nursing schools to provide loans to nurses who will become nurse faculty. The nation’s nursing schools are experiencing a shortage of nurse faculty, which impacts the numbers of students schools can enroll. The U.S. faces a shortage of 260,000 nurses over the next 15 years, yet U.S. baccalaureate nursing programs turned away more nearly 50,000 qualified applicants last year.
