Facing Projected Shortfall, Ohio Senate Acts to Educate More Nurses

The Ohio Senate unanimously passed SB 89, the Comprehensive Nursing Education Bill. The legislation, spearheaded by Ohio State Senator Sue Morano, is designed to better allocate funding and resources for nursing education in the state. It implements recommendations of the Nursing Education Study Committee, which found that 65 percent of nursing schools in Ohio cited "faculty shortage" as the main reason for not accepting all qualified nursing school applicants.

In Ohio, 40 percent of practicing nurses are expected to leave the field within the next 10 years.
