Visiting Nurse Service of New York Offers Community-Based Approach to Elder Care

It’s called the Congregate Care program of the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY), but congregate nurse Joann Walsh sees it as the ultimate health care environment where residents of housing communities in the Greater New York City area can have access to health information, blood pressure screenings, flu shots and other health services and resources. Prevention is a key component of this model and as such helps seniors maintain a sense of independence while staying healthy and connected to their communities. Walsh, who has been a nurse for 26 years says, "A congregate care site is true community health nursing.”
