Connecticut Nursing Summit 2012

The Summit was attended by over 120 nursing and non-nursing leaders in Connecticut and began the process of creating regional task forces focused on evaluating national educational competencies and creating a plan for implementation.  

The adoption of these competencies has two fundamental purposes:
•    To insure that graduates from all levels of nursing schools/programs are able to effectively transition to the workplace, and
•    To support seamless advancement for nurses at all levels of education saving time, money and leveraging their previous learning and expertise.

The Summit was facilitated by:  Maureen Sroczynski, DNP, RN, Nursing Education Expert/Consultant from the AARP Center to Champion Nursing in America.

Each group will perform a gap analysis to determine the educational needs within the 5 geographic regions in Connecticut.  It is imperative that all non-nursing partners engage in the activities initiated via the Summit to share their insight and experiences with healthcare workforce recruitment and development.

The process will identify areas for development and ultimately create best-in-practice educational models based on the national competencies.  Moreover, this process will help Connecticut to formulate new models of education for the seamless transition RN to BSN/MSN/DNP pathways with the ultimate result of creating a more prepared and diverse nursing workforce to meet current and future healthcare needs.

The participants were introduced to the Nursing Education Competency-Based Model supported by the Robert Wood Johnson/AARP Champions of Nursing campaign and learned how to apply elements of the model within Connecticut.
