Accelerated Nursing Program at Boston College in Line with IOM Report Recommendations
With funding and support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s New Careers in Nursing (NCIN) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Boston College launched in 2008, what can now be called an “education progression,” program. The program, under the NCIN banner, was viewed as an answer to the national nursing shortage as well as improving diversity in the nursing workforce because it lessened the education bottleneck by moving nursing and non-nursing students with baccalaureate degrees through an accelerated path to advanced degrees—master’s degree; doctorate. Program participants came from a wide range of backgrounds, including those traditionally underrepresented in nursing.
