The National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) has chosen Mirian Zavala, MS, RN, DNS(c), as the 2011 NAHN Nurse of the Year. Ms. Zavala's volunteer work, which "has positively influenced the health and well-being of the Hispanic community," was noted as a significant factor in her selection.
Ms. Zavala is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Pace University in New York and a nurse for over 20 years. She is actively involved with the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), and the Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives (AHHE).
CCNA highlighted Ms. Zavala's leadership in its Profiles in Health Care Leadership Series—As an active member of the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) Program Committee, an advanced practicing nurse, a university clinical professor and a doctoral candidate, Mirian Zavala capitalizes on her multiple roles as platforms “to educate the public about the importance of health care for all Americans,” notes Zavala. “Everybody,” she says, “deserves quality and affordable health care especially the uninsured and underinsured populations which is essentially the mission at NHMA.” Read the full profile here.
