HHS Announces $250 Million Primary Care Workforce Investment

This week, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced $250 million in new investments to increase the number of health care providers and strengthen the primary care workforce. This announcement reflects an increasing focus on workforce issues as part of health care reform implementation; the new investments were made possible by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

New “Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity” Awards Announced by American Academy of Nursing

CCNA's Nursing Council member, the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), has announced that over $2 million in awards will be handed out to its latest cohort of fellows and scholars in academic geriatric nursing. Each of the eight Claire M. Fagin postdoctoral fellows will receive $120,000 to support their career development and eleven predoctoral scholars will each receive $100,000 to help launch careers in academic geriatric nursing. HRSA Geriatric Academic Career Award Application Now Available

The Health Services and Resources Administration (HRSA) has updated its Geriatric Academic Career Award Application (GACA) to reflect provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010, Public Law 111-148. Under the Act, disciplines that are now eligible for these awards include medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, nursing, social work, psychology, and pharmacy, among others. The HRSA recommends that all individuals applying for the awards review the updated application in its entirety, as there have been significant changes.

National Health Service Corp Scholarship Opportunity

The National Health Service Corp is seeking applicants who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited health professions training program.  Eligible applicant programs are medicine (MD or DO), dentistry, family nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwife or physician assistant.  This opportunity has been expanded to include eligibility for all primary care nurse practitioners.  Applicants are eligible to apply before their first year or after they have finished one or more years of school.

The Center to Champion Nursing in America is pleased to share the recently released initial findings of the 2008 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The Sample Survey, a leading source of statistics on the nursing profession, is published every four years by HRSA’s Bureau of Health Professions. For the Center, these new data confirm that the U.S. is making progress relevant to our mission to ensure all Americans have a highly-skilled nurse when and where they need one.

HRSA Announces Availability of Equipment to Enhance Training for Health Professionals (EETHP) Grants

This initiative, which includes multiple programs, provides grant funds for the purchase of health professions training equipment. There are 21 health professions training programs from Titles III, VII and VIII of the Public Health Service Act that fall under this initiative. Each program has limited eligible activities that are described in their respective announcements.
