The California Action Coalition, which includes over 700 nurses and other health care workers partnering with organizations such as the California Hospital Association, the Association of California Nurse Leaders and the California Academy of Family Physicians, is championing nurses in a big way. The AC, selected as one of five state groups in 2010 to pilot the implementation of the IOM report recommendations has wholeheartedly embraced the implementation of not one, but all eight recommendations.
The Nursing Organizations Alliance will host the Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) Program, February 26-28, 2012. The conference is designed to provide nurses the opportunity to learn how to influence health care through the legislative and regulatory processes. Participants will learn from health policy experts and government officials, network with other nurses, and visit members of Congress. NIWI is open to RN and nursing student at all levels of education who are interested in learning more about the legislative process.
Patricia Horoho, RN, MSN, MS, is the first woman and first non-physician to assume the role of Army surgeon general. The Army surgeon general serves as the medical expert on the Army and and provides guidance to field units. Horoho received her BSN from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her MSN as a clinical trauma nurse specialist from the University of Pittsburgh. She is also a resident graduate of the Army's Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is coordinating a unique, multi-funder initiative to identify, generate, synthesize and disseminate evidence essential to informing efforts to implement the recommendations outlined in the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” and to contribute to the Campaign for Action’s goal of advancing comprehensive change in health care for patients and the country. CCNA is pleased to offer this new resource—an hour-long introductory program to help prepare nurse leaders who are considering board leadership.
Prepared by the Center, this presentation was developed with the input of a number of nurse leaders who have served on boards and includes video interviews of their insights and experience. The program includes both an overview of the skills nurses need to serve on a board as well as tips on how to get started building the network and experience required to advance to the next level.
Loretta Ford, RN, EdD, PNP, FAAN, FAANP, and Donna E. Shalala, PhD, were recently inducted in to the National Women's Hall of Fame. Both women were recognized as individuals whose accomplishments are of enduring value on national and international levels and will have lasting effects on the lives of others.
