The new health care reform  law, signed by President Obama in April 2010, identifies nurses as critical players in meeting the changing health care needs of Americans. Nurses, especially advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), can provide much of the care we need. But statutory and regulatory barriers at state and federal levels prevent many nurses from practicing to the full extent of their licensure.

In January, the Josiah Macy Foundation convened a conference to address who will provide primary care in the U.S. and how those professionals will be trained. Top among the panel’s recommendations: state and national reimbursement policies should remove barriers that make it hard for nurse practitioners and physician assistants to serve as primary-care providers.

Hiring Dilemma of New Nurse Graduates

Newly graduated nurses are finding the job market tight for them as they begin to compete with more experienced registered nurses (RNs) who have continued to work because of the economy.  This is according to a California Institute for Nursing & Health Care paper. Positions typically available to new nurses are scarce because fewer nurses are retiring and many others continue to work part-time. This situation is only worsened due to cut backs on new hires by hospitals and health systems.

Oregon nurses are, overall, satisfied with their career choice and this satisfaction has grown in recent years according to a report from the Oregon Center for Nursing.
