As part of the Initiative on the Future of Nursing, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has launched http://www.thefutureofnursing.org. The site serves as a resource for health care leaders, policymakers, consumers, and other stakeholders and provides access to the research and data behind the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report recommendations, as well as ideas, action steps, and resources, including toolkits and template materials, that community leaders across the country can use to implement the recommendations.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) provide primary care. NPs and CNMs take health histories, provide complete physical exams, diagnose and treat many common acute and chronic problems, interpret lab results and other diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and teach and counsel patients and their families about health and illness.

This project is conceptualized as a University-based, National Nursing Education program, which utilizes competency-based education, distance learning and advanced technology (both computer and clinical technology) to prepare Registered Nurses at the baccalaureate level. Western Governors University (WGU) is developing the program within its Department of Nursing.

In December 2009, Champion Nursing teams from across the country gathered in Arlington, TX to explore the use of simulation in nursing education. Teams visited the University of Texas-Arlington’s (UTA) School of Nursing Smart Hospital.
