CCNA’s Pat Polansky spoke to NurseZone.com during Nurses' Week about ways nursing has changed since the first Nurses' Day in 1954. Pat, who serves as Director of Policy and Communications for the Center, emphasized that the changing needs of patients and families has really driven the nursing profession to respond and lead – an underlying theme of the Institute of Medicine Report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.

Bob Donaldson, clinical director of emergency at Ellenville Regional Hospital in New York, has been elected president of the hospital’s medical staff. Donaldson, a nurse practitioner, sees his election as emblematic of Ellenville Regional’s collaborative culture. He recommends other hospitals follow its lead: “Anyone who has the capability or qualifications to run should be allowed to run if they are a member of the medical staff and meet the appropriate criteria.

In a January 2011, Journal of Nurse Practitioners editorial, Marilyn W. Edmunds, PhD, NP, writes that nurse practitioners now have increasing opportunities to move into policy-making roles. Edmunds says that by positioning themselves in such roles, NPs are able to help effect change that will be more beneficial to not only NPs, but to all health care providers. Susan B.
