Not only does the center provide care that represents the future of health care, but it offers clinical education to nursing students in a community-based setting, emphasizing holistic care, and delivered by an interdisciplinary team.

According to Nurse.com, an aging operating room workforce, coupled with an increasing demand for surgery from an aging population, could become problematic without continued recruitment of  qualified operating room (OR) nurses. To address this looming problem, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), as well as hospitals across the country are implementing programs to retain older nurses while at the same time recruiting and training younger nurses into the OR specialty.

According to recently released study in the Journal of Intensive Care Medicine, simulation-based learning significantly reduces the number of medication errors. This first-of-its-kind study, was conducted in adult coronary critical care (CCU) and medical intensive care (MICU) units in the Pittsburgh area. The third, and final, of three nationwide forums held by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) is scheduled for February22, 2010, at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. This forum will focus on issues related to nursing and interdisciplinary education. The first forum, held in October 2009 in Los Angeles, focused on nursing across acute care settings. The second forum, held in Philadelphia, reached out to the community for a discussion on public health, primary care, and long-term care.
